From Isolation to Action: the Benefits of Digital Group Recovery
Here at the London Pain Clinic, our world-class Pain Doctors, are well aware of the recent research which indicates that: “the efficacy of telehealth Virtual Reality (VR) for chronic pain, a promising digital intervention, remains under-explored due to methodological challenges. [Indeed], many non-pharmacological treatments claim to be efficient in reducing chronic pain, including meditation, clinical hypnosis and more recently, virtual reality” [1].
Leading the way in Europe, our Pain Specialists, who are always abreast of the latest cutting-edge research, are sought after, in that once they have given an accurate diagnosis (something which is not always possible with a GP visit), they provide the patient with a Holistic Personalised Treatment Plan, which they can get started on right away. This is likely to incorporate various types of therapeutics. These include:
- Conventional treatment including pharmaceuticals
- Various types of beneficial therapies (including targeted physiotherapy)
- State-of-the-art injectables (such as pain blockers and Botox)
- Lifestyle and nutritional guidance
Did You Know?
“Prolonged waiting times in public healthcare establishments for treatment of chronic pain, can sometimes exceed 4 years” [1]. Naturally, this is wholly unacceptable, and this is why our renowned Pain Doctors are ready to provide you with an optimum service right away
The Low-Down on Digital Support for Chronic Pain Management
A choice of online and in-person appointments have long been the norm, here at the Harley Street, London Pain Clinic. – And in many respects working with patients digitally (whenever possible, has been a great success. So to that end, we are closely following the limited high level studies which show the advantages of digital group interventions for long-term pain. These include:
- Decreased Pain
Some research has concluded that when used for long-term pain, virtual reality (VR) interventions substantially lowered the patient’s pain intensity [2].
- Elevated Mood
Digital interventions were shown to ameliorate depressive symptoms and anxiety, in addition to boosting the patient’s mood [2].
- Reduced Pain Interference
VR programs were shown to assist in the lowering of pain interference through daily activities [2].
- Better Quality of Sleep
Virtual reality guidance resulted in ameliorated sleep quality [2].
- Relieving Isolation It has been determined that group settings (including those conducted in VR), which provide support and enable shared experiences, are able to counter the negative feelings of isolation (that a large percentage of long-term pain sufferers endure). Indeed, some VR participants are able to move away from feeling isolated, to proactively taking measures to manage their pain [2].
Measuring the Effect of the Digital Interventions
With regard to the levels of pain, as our Pain Consultants explain, the success of interventions are generally calculated through the use of various tools. These evaluate the effect that a patient’s pain has on their daily functioning [2].
- Depression and Anxiety
A particular medical scale is employed for the purpose of ascertaining levels of antidepressant and anxiolytic (a medication or other intervention that reduces anxiety) symptoms [1].
- Use of Medication
Researchers also record changes in medication uptake, depression, anxiety and pain [1].
